Application/Quality 8x AF
Under both drivers these settings are essentially the same. Filtering Performance Under OpenGL Quake III Arena has been a benchmarking staple due to its highly repeatable results and overall stability. I decided to take a look at filtering performance under OpenGL using this application. Texture settings were placed at Performance/High Performance for the drivers, and under these circumstances the new drivers do take a small lead (typically less than 5%). When in the game, visual quality was essentially the same overall for both settings. The texture slider is then placed on Quality/Performance for the drivers, and again the newer Det. FX drivers take a small lead. Once 8x AF is enabled, the difference is very small between the two. Once the texture slider is placed on the Application/Quality setting, the differences between the two are a bit more impressive. At the most there is about a 10% difference between the old and the new. Here the new Det. FX drivers get a chance to strecth their legs. For one reason or another, the performance difference in OpenGL is not as great as we will be seeing in Direct3D. NVIDIA has always had a very solid OpenGL ICD, so this could be part of it.
