Sapphire X800 AGP VIVO Review

Midrange Greatness?

NHL 2005

I really wanted to include a game outside of your standard shooter and being the hockey fan that I am, I threw in NHL 2005.  As you might guess, NHL 2005 isn’t the most intensely graphical game, but it does manage to deliver some good visuals.

X800

No AA/AF

4X AA 16X AF

1280x1024

73.44 fps

62.45 fps

1600x1200

62.45 fps

50.18 fps

You may want to note that only 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 resolutions were used in NHL.

The standard X800 PCI-E is based on the same PCB as the X800 XL PCI-E.  The inclusion of the Rialto chip, as well as the extra power circuitry, has made the X800 AGP a longer card.

Half Life 2

With Half-Life 2 I ran a custom demo from the single player portion of the game where you are attacked on your hover boat.

HL2 Custom No AA/AF

X800

9700 Pro

1024x768

70.84 fps

55.46 fps

1280x1024

66.42 fps

47.71 fps

1600x1200

59.41 fps

40.7 fps

Note that with no AA or AF applied, the X800 still outpaces the 9700 Pro by a significant margin at every resolution.

HL2 Custom 4X AA/8X AF

X800

9700 Pro

1024x768

55.56 fps

43.25 fps

1280x1024

52.85 fps

27.66 fps

1600x1200

41.45 fps

20.1 fps

The difference in overall performance with AA and AF enabled is also quite stunning, especially once 1280x1024 is reached.  At 1600x1200, the X800 is over twice as fast as the older 9700 Pro.

HL2 Custom 6X AA/16X AF

X800

9700 Pro

1024x768

53.69 fps

36.99 fps

1280x1024

47.29 fps

23.38 fps

1600x1200

36.48 fps

11.37 fps

The situation is much the same for the higher AA and AF settings.  The X800 simply burns the 9700 Pro at every resolution, and once 1600x1200 is reached it is over three times faster than the 9700 Pro.  As you can see, the X800 even on a system that is a bit older absolutely owns Half-Life 2.  It is still playable at the max resolution with AA and AF turned on.
